Amnioduvet is a medical biologics company providing a suite of proprietary amniotic membrane products used by surgeons for the protection of vital structures during neck surgery of all types.
Amniotic membrane is believed to delay the immediate surgical inflammatory process around the nerve which is accompanied by fibroblast and collagen deposition encasing the nerve, potentially decreasing or eliminating the dreaded loss of voice or swallowing problems that can last for months.
The Amnioduvet Nerve Shield can protect laryngeal nerves from injuries during and after all forms of neck surgery. Once the nerve is exposed, the patented biologic blanket is placed to protect it during the operation and left in place to speed the healing process.
Amniotic tissue has been shown to provide IGF, EGF, and NGF which can promote healing of neck nerves should any physical injury occur during surgery. Minor traction or dissection injuries heal faster with a more rapid return of normal nerve function, swallowing, and voice.
Physical injuries to the laryngeal nerves may heal faster with quicker return of voice and swallowing function due to the many benefits of the amniotic nerve shield. Physical injuries to an exposed nerve and irritation in the immediate postoperative period are potentially diminished by the physical barrier provided.
Long-term scarring of the laryngeal nerves are a factor of early inflammation and excess fibroblast deposition which may be decreased via the physical and immunologic properties of the amniotic nerve shield. The Duvet can allow overlying muscles to glide over the exposed nerve during healing without causing scaring or further irritation.
Informed patients know the risks of laryngeal nerve injury during surgery and expect all reasonable measures to be taken by their surgeon to prevent injury and enhance healing of any exposed nerve. Our patients have shown a near unanimous request for the Nerve Shield when given a choice.
Parathyroid glands are at risk during every neck operation. It takes very little manipulation to render them ischemic. Application of the "Amniotic Dot" can often save weeks of repeated doctor visits and dozens of lab tests.
Traditional teaching was to remove ischemic glands and autotransplant--a process that guarantees them to be non-functional for months. Instead, leave the gland in-situ and apply a "Parathyroid Dot" and have function within a week or two
Postoperative hypocalcemia is one of the biggest concerns following thyroid and parathyroid surgery. Clinical studies have shown significant reduction in time to normocalcemia, a lower dose and shorter duration of calcium therapy, fewer doctor visits, and fewer blood tests.
In-vitro studies have shown significant parathyroid cell growth and increased production and secretion of PTH when exposed to amniotic tissue. The Parathyroid Dot provides targeted application of growth factors in the postoperative period.
Just like in the laboratory, it appears that amniotic tissue delivers growth factors that encourage revascularization and a quicker return to normal function. Clinical studies show quicker return to normal PTH levels in patients receiving the Parathyroid Dot.
Amnioduvet's Parathyroid Dot is pre-cut and easy to apply directly onto the ischemic gland. The application has the potential to save weeks of postoperative calcium and PTH testing and calcium supplementation. Better for the surgeon and the patient!
