Dr Norman's quest for a protective "blanket" or "shield" or "protector" for the laryngeal nerve began in 2012 and involved experimenting with the use of multiple different products. Some of the materials he tried where man-made. Others where biologics of various forms--some thick, some thin, some transparent, some opaque, some liquid, some solid. He tried them all. There are several amnion and amnion/chorion products available on the market and he tried the various products from a number of manufacturers.
When Dr Clayman joined Dr Norman in Tampa from MD Anderson where he was the Chief of Head and Neck Surgery, and the Leader of the MD Anderson Thyroid Cancer Program, he began using the different products that Dr Norman had been working with. These two experts have performed far more head and neck operations than any other doctors in the world and have exposed tens of thousands of recurrent laryngeal nerves.
Through many different applications and trials with different forms and composition of amnion and/or chorion, Dr Norman found the best form, size, thickness, preparation and shape that maximizes the biologic effects while being easy to use for the surgeon. The Amnioduvet products handle better than other standard amniotic membranes. While being soft, they still remains semi-transparent while gently adhering to the nerve and parathyroid glands, wrapping them gently as they provide growth factors and stem cells directly to the injured and stressed tissues.
